Words from the Book of Second Chances

The Book of Second Chances slowly reveals words that sometimes help and sometimes confuse Hillary and Windslow. Here is the complete set of riddles from the Book and the chapter where the each part of the riddle appears.

Chapter 5: Hillary and Windslow fall asleep and dream-slip to the world of Gabendoor. Fistlock dream-snatches Hillary who lands in his dungeon. She meets the fast talking Molly Folly Sallyforth in the cell next to her. The wizards intercept Windslow and question him about the Book.  They are surprised that words have appeared on the once blank pages.

The story in this chance begins,

Found in pages locked within.

Open them with words of care.

What you seek is waiting there.

Chapter 7: Windslow dream-slips home. At school he asks a teacher what she would do if she had a second chance at something.  She says she'd use a second chance to find an old boyfriend.  New words appear in the Book, hinting at the teacher's wish.

Something lost in time long past,

Chancing love she thought would last

You helped her think of what to do.

A link once cut she now renews.

Chapter 10: Windslow and the wizards escape the spiders and travel on foot to Dreadmoor Temple. Windslow dream-slips home while still trapped in Dreadmoor.  At home he learns his teacher got her second chance. More words appear in the Book. He begins to have ideas about how it works.

A second chance you granted them.

Teachers reach for hope again.

The first of four you did not waste,

Although you wished the chance in haste.

Chapter two this lesson learn,

Do not ask for what you yearn.

Magic does not come from here.

It comes from those who loose their fear

Chapter 13: Windslow and Hillary hope to use the Book's chances to save Gabendoor. Windslow feels guilty about wanting to use at least one chance to walk again. He agrees to meet Hillary at Biffendear’s cottage, home of the Book’s last owner.

Chances hide when first you look

Seek your answers from this book

The words placed here for you to see

Came from what you made them be

There is no magic where you thought.

It came from things its bearer brought

These pages put you to the test

You’ve learned to plan and do your best.

Chapter 16: Hillary and Windslow spend more time trying to decipher the Book's riddles.  The Wizards and Sallyforth triplets wait for the brother/sister team. The Gorlon is coming.

The Gorlon comes, it brings a chance

For one who takes a special stance

If puzzled out one wish will come.

A prize for something that you’ve done.

Chapter 17: Hillary escapes the Gorlon and becomes lost inside Larkstone's magic zipper closet. The Gorlon captures Windslow. Molly is either dead or unconscious, tangled in a vine wrapped around the Gorlon's leg.  Her sisters disappear into a pond below the waterfall.

Chances do not guarantee.

Results are what you make them be.

You took no chance to win or fail

A chance is lost if not availed

You made your choice when two fears came

A copied chance works out the same.

Something different, something new.

Is what second chance gives to you.

Chapter 18: Inside the magic closet, Hillary travels to the Oracle who helps her with some riddles and gives her more. Hillary solves the puzzles and discovers the secrets of the Book. Windslow despairs. He tries to save Molly. He dream-slips before learning if he was successful.

No chances come to those who dwell

When fear has locked them in its spell.

Each second chance from courage grown,

Learn to make them on your own.

The daughter of mountain breeze

Will learn from what her brother sees.

Now with answers will she know

How to make her brother grow?

Chapter 24: Windslow dream-slips and finds the wizards in the next cell. Fistlock's men capture Hillary and lock her up with her brother. The Sallyforth sisters use a shadow creature to hide themselves and “scritch” a cell key.  The triplets tell Windslow and Hillary more secrets.

Chances always come with fears

To overcome one perseveres

Turn chance to opportunity

Do not prejudge what you can be.

Courage brings a second chance

A time for growth and to advance

This lesson was about your guilt

And the confidence you built

With chances and with what you know

Your world awaits to watch you grow.

Your futures wind through many paths

You’re free to walk them now at last.

From The Book of Broken Promises

Opening Poem to set the tone in chapter 1

Chapter 1: Night Messages
Acker snack
Bones that crack.

In dim light
Nightmare fright.

Don’t dare to come
Where demons run.

They fear the light,
But in their home they rule the night.

So stay away from shades of black
Where light grows old and spirits bold.

Dreadmoor temple holds them fast,
Unless a promise taken back.

Acker snack, the vile is cracked.
Gristle-tooth will soon be loose.

They search for Children of the Wind
To break the curse that held them in.

Nightmares learn to rule the day
And each one steals a life away.

Guard your heart and use the book
To seal the promises they took.

Chapter 2: The Riddle Bitterbrun found with the magic vial.

Alive without breath
All else brings you death.

Bathed in the light
Dormant at night.

No husband or wife
Water brings life.

Child of the ground
The secret is found

Chapter 3: Opening poem to set mood.

Amber Glash
Nails that slash.
Like a knife,
He wants your life.

Make a pledge and make it fast
Seal him in his tomb at last.
When you see him do not run
He’ll chase and gnash to have his fun.

Chapter 3: First words to show up in The Book of Twisted Truths

“A Promise to Be Broken.” On Hillary’s envelope from her father

Chapter 4: Words show up in the book

Promises held by clay begin to break.
Beware.
For in their breaking,
vows within foreshadow death.

Potters they may be;
Son of Summer Storm and
Daughter of Mountain Breeze
.
They bring hope to shape the clay
.

Will the Children of the Wind
know which promises to break
and which to keep
?
he magic of the book will wait and see
.

New Words in Chapter 6

Is this one you’ll keep or break?
For each there is a price to weigh.
Beware the cost of what’s at stake.
It might be one you cannot pay.

New words in chapter 8

Crimson wings bring her near.
Hide your fear.

She holds a key that has no lock.
Set the clock.

Aghasta rules her space in time.
Hear the chime.

Before the night.

Trapped by promises she keeps.
In dungeon deep.

Untangled love will free them both.
Release her oath.

Use all three to find the white
Cleansed at last from lover’s light.

Summer Storm and Mountain Breeze
Are the lures for them to seize.

Wizard’s skill must seal the vow
An heir to Fistlock will know how.

Dreadmoor is the final place
Hurry, for it’s Time you race.

New words in chapter 13

Our research is nearly complete, despite my disagreement with Gristle-tooth. I can’t accept his theories on how to rid Abba-dread of the rogue time-mists. Most of his experiments have failed, and I am afraid the aftereffects are driving him mad. I can’t allow him to take any more risks with the book, so I have hidden it from him. He is furious and has been trying to hunt me down.
I’m convinced there are several promises tied to three special clocks in Abba-dread. One clock represents me, the second Aghasta, and the third Gristle-tooth. The mists of Abba-dread created the clocks when we created the book of Broken Promises.
I fear Gristle-tooth will find me, or come to the same conclusion. It’s a risk but I’ve changed the clocks. The solution to undoing the promises is hidden in them. Look for the triplets. That’s all I can say.

Fernbark’s spell in the forest

Mist of time I call a strand
To the vines at my command

Make their time an early year
Do it when I… I…

Do it when I touch…
When I…
…reach?
Ah…
Um…
“Mirror, tear, beer, gear!” Hillary yelled.
“Do it when I lick his ear!”

New Words Chapter 13

Time has come in traveler’s land,
Death within impostor’s hand.

Two names takes a stand at last,
The choice connects him to his past.

Two names helps the other two,
He speaks the truth of what to do.

If he keeps what Windslow gave,
A promise breaks but two lives saved.

Fistlock casts a spell in the hospital

Normal sleep
No counting sheep.

Spell cast on Hillary to help a deer.

Offered love with no remorse
Tie her essence to this source.
A simple promise made a wish
A battle waged against the mist.

Magic Song Hillary hears

From haggard wolf to forest fawn
A wizard holds me through the dawn.

From lark above to stone on land
A wizard helps me as he can.

From lonely fern to forest bark
A wizard guides me through the dark.

I am the one who sings this song
The promises you grieve are gone.

I’m Gabendoor both now and past
But now each breath could be my last.

The magic of my life is low
Destroy the book to end the snow

Words in the book and from the clocks.

Crimson wings bring her near.
Hide your fear.

She holds a key that has no lock.
Set the clock.

Aghasta rules her space in time.
Hear the chime.

Crystal eye with ruby light.

Untangled love will free them both.
Release her oath.

Hide your fear.
Set the clock.
Hear the chime.
Before the night.
In dungeon deep.
Release her oath.

Molly Folly has come home.
But magic still is free to roam.
Aghasta’s charm will cease to be
Her path to freedom she will see.

Said by the voice of magic.

Aghasta’s fate is now set free
The truth of bondage she will see.
A destiny is hers to meet
No longer clouded by deceit.

The book will show itself to you and take you on another flight.

Letter Hillary took from the Ship

Fear the bad

Today you have begun your historic voyage to discover what hides beyond the great curving mountains. Text missing, but I assume it speaks of hostility. I fear we Forgers have momentous obstacles before us including chaos and trouble at Stone Mountain. The upheaval of aggression is of great concern. We must block the enemy at the canyon so passage will be impassable and block return of any armies. That will allow us to clear civilians in time without being rushed. There should be great worry for you and all your crew. You will be facing great dangers.

This calamity was your fault and you should feel forever shamed because it was you who failed to insure our safety and it was you upon whom all blame is placed. You dare not show your face ever in this world again for your failings. It is our decision that you are out, cast from this land forever for yourself and for all your descendants.

You will abandon all claims you have to the Forge and Whittlers. No attempts to clear the dignity ripped from others can succeed. The Raw, merciless actions you have undertaken have carved a rift that can never be closed. You have filled us with rage. Your retreat to safety on the other side of this world can not save you. you well know that your fate is forever cursed along with all who have the folly to go with you.

Forever dwell on problems left in your hideous wake. This is to be your legacy. You are forever shamed. You will be ever afraid to show your face or the curse will bring a quick and painful death to you and all your kind.

Cold-Hearth.

Chapter 19 New Words

Must be undone.

A task grows near. It will not change.
If princess prince are rearranged.
A chance to fix a twisted truth
Is only done by one of youth.

New Words Chapter 22

You untwisted fibs you told.
Do the same for other’s old.
Each half learns facts from the other.
Needed skills come from your mother.

From the Forge-Twiddler Library

Host Haven, mountain storm,
Chasing rainbows, men forlorn.

Could vision crossed confuse a map?
With darkest night against a mast?

Vows of failure, hidden places,
Never gaze on covered faces.

One returned who shouldn’t be,
Back across unconquered sea.

Forgers, whittlers, all of craft,
Filled with hope while others laugh.

Undo what’s done with magic book.
Child of Wind knows where to look.

Forge-Twiddlers face the shame,
The life they live and those they blame.

Never more. Ever shame.

Version of the Letter Windslow Found

Dear Sliver-Glade,

I do not know what has] begun. Did you now discover what hides beyond the forces of water. I do envy you, all the others and your adventure. I fear we Forgers have few obstacles left to us to stabilize the chaos we have brought by Mother of the Wind and her upheaval of the grave balance power which has worsened, as you well know. I fear her wizards who we tried to widen will be impossible when you find them. Had we not tried to bridge the narrows of their minds, would not be so despondent. My heart fills with offence. The ship is not as sturdy as we had planned to make her.

Until your safe return, I will feel forever shamed that it was I who thought a wider pass, and the wagons it would accommodate, was to your benefit. So heavy is my sorrow, I dare not speak my mind at times, lest others see my tears. On this morn, I will watch you sail outward, holding onto lines, and trim sails. Joy will fill me for a day.

We will soon abandon Haven Castle. I did not tell you that our last walk was clear the gravimite ripped the skin of Gabendoor. Evil magic races skyward through the rift we caused. It mixes with the gravimite it carries upward, causing storms of magic wind. We must abandon our home in the heart of Stone Mountain. If trapped here, I do know that food and water are not sufficient for all man and beast who helped us with this project.

Do not dwell on my problems left behind for Forge and whomever comes. Look to the horizon, never harmed, never conquered. Seek us in our new home and be] filled with the look of courage I so admire.

Fair wind, to you and crew.

Hammer-Hoof.

The last words that form in the book

Father daughter
Both are lost.
Reunite
But at what cost?

Fix the tears
That forms the rifts.
Peace will be
Your final gift.

-The End-

Hillary Translates the letters

Dear Sliver-blade,

Today you have begun your historic voyage to discover what hides beyond the great curving water. I do envy you, all the Whittlers, and your adventure. I fear we Forgers have momentous obstacles before us to stabilize the chaos we have brought to Stone Mountain. The upheaval of the gravimite has worsened as you well know. I fear the canyon we tried to widen will be impassible when you return. Had we not tried to clear the narrows, time would not be so rushed. My heart fills with worry for you and all your crew. The ship is not as sturdy as we had planned to make her.

Until your safe return, I will feel forever shamed that it was I who thought a wider pass, and the wagons it would accommodate, was to your benefit. So heavy is my sorrow, I dare not show my face at times, lest others see my tears. On this morn, I will watch you sail out, cast lines, and trim sails. Joy will fill me for a day.

We will soon abandon Haven Castle. I did not tell you that our last attempts to clear the gravimite ripped the skin of Gabendoor. Raw magic races skyward through the rift we caused. It mixes with the gravimite it carries upward, causing storms of magic rage. We must retreat to safety on the other side of Stone Mountain. If trapped here, you well know that food and water are not sufficient for all who helped us with this project.

Do not dwell on problems left behind for Forge and Whittlers. Look to the horizon, never shamed, never afraid to show your face filled with the look of courage I so admire.

Fair wind, to you and crew.
